Light has a speed limit - it travels at a constant speed of 299,792,458 metres per second, so it takes years for the light produced by distant astronomical objects to reach Earth. When we look up and see stars and galaxies, we’re really seeing them as they were some time ago - and how long ago depends on how far away the object is. For example, it takes sunlight eight minutes to reach earth, so if the sun just suddenly disappeared (highly unlikely by the way), it would take us eight minutes to realise!

Some galaxies are so far away that we actually see them as they were billions of years ago - when the universe was still young. Theoretically, we can see all the stages of the universe’s development just by looking up.

I’ve been fascinated by this fact for years. How, by looking up into the night sky, we’re travelling back in time. Millions and billions of years.
